Utilising IS:1893-2016 version Analysis Packages for IS:1893-2025 code

BIS has released the Revised version of IS:1893-2025, released as Part-1 and Part-5. At this point of time (Dec 2025), we are in a situation where the new IS:1893-2025 codes have been released, but the analysis packages we use are still programmed for IS:1893-2016. It is also to be noted that the old code IS:1893-2016 is not valid with effect from 03/05/2026.

The aim of this program (embedded in excel file) is to serve as an application using which the new code IS:1893-2025 can be implemented in the current version of analysis package (like STAAD.Pro, ETABS, etc.) which are presently available meant to perform analysis as per the old code of IS:1893-2016.

This program calculates parameters and Response Spectrum curves which can be used to utilise the present versions of analysis packages, as it is (which as of now are already set for the 2016 version of code), for performing analysis according to the newly released codes -- for the analysis packages of STAAD.Pro and ETABS. It also provides the data in a general format that can be utilized for any other package, like MIDAS, STRAP, etc. for example, after suitable formatting.

The set of programs can be downloaded as a zipped file, IS1893-Converter-261225.zip* (click on the name to download). From the download zipped format, unzip the files to a folder and start with the Excel sheet file you see in it. The details of using the Excel program can be read from the PDF file included in the zipped file downloaded -- please read it before proceeding

... with elaborate facilities to ease the calculation of Time period, T, as per the New code, which is otherwise quite cumbersome to workout in paper.

A test case of Time period calculation is also included in this ZIP file, done as a verification of the program for a test sample shown below

After the details have been entered and processed, a worksheet that elaborates the calculation process for static method…

Also, in the main sheet parameters are generated for Static method as well as for Response Spectrum Method.

Following either of the methods elaborated above, one may enter the values to the appropriate dialog boxes in the Analysis package and proceed with the analysis. Details of the process of appropriately entering the parameters to different Analysis packages can be found in the sheet named "Package Inputs". The details are provided for the analysis packages of STAAD.Pro ...

Parameters are also given in a general form, which can be utilized in analysis package other than STAAD.Pro and ETABS. The specific approach to be taken various from package to package

The Load Combinations will have to be corrected/re-written according to the new code (8.4.1, IS:1893 (Part 5) 2025). This has to be done by the user

The process of determining horizontal acceleration, Ah, using the two parts of the codes, can be found in a flowchart from in the sheet named "Calc-flow".

A comparison of RS curves between the old and new codes can be found in the sheet named "RSCurves".

This program will not be of much use, once the updated versions are released by the respective software vendors. However, the designers may want to continue using ‘Time Period Calculation’ facilities available in this Excel sheet, which I expect to continue to be useful.

Please post feedback and point out any corrections, if caught your notice. Hope this program will be useful for you.
